Small Steps

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Small Steps and find out more about the fantastic work they do.  The first thing that surprised me was what a small set up they are but how much of an impact they make on the children and parents who attend their sessions.

They provide a service for pre-school children with cerebral palsy and other forms of motor impairment, syndromes or sensory impairment.  They receive no government funding and are 100% reliant on donations and fund raising activity.

They run sessions every day during the week for groups of five pre-school children and their parents.  The sessions work with the children to help them develop their motor and social skills. They also heavily involves the parents so they can continue to help their children when they get home.

I also had a chance to speak to a grandmother of one of the children who attends the group.  She told me how much her grandson had come along thanks to the work of Small Steps.  At first he would not even interact with anyone in the group but when I saw him he was happily singing away with the other children.  She also said that one of the other great benefits of Small Steps was that it provided a great support network for the parents and gave them a chance to meet other parents with children with similar needs.

Having been to see Small Steps has really galvanised in my mind that I have picked a very worthwhile and worthy charity to support on my South Down Challenge.  Please dig deep as every penny donated really makes a huge difference to them.

Many thanks

Nick
